Numerous activists for women's rights and Hollywood stars celebrate the conviction of producer Harvey Weinstein for rape and sexual offense

The sentence against film producer Harvey Weinstein, found guilty on Monday of sexual assault and rape, has been celebrated by numerous activists for the rights of women and Hollywood stars.

"This trial and the jury's decision mark a new era in justice, not only for the Silence Breakers [in Spanish, 'Those who broke the silence'] who spoke at great personal risk, but for all survivors of harassment, abuse and aggression at work, "said Tina Tchen, the head of the Time's Up foundation, created to combat sexual harassment in the entertainment industry.

In the statement, shared on social networks by actresses such as Julianne Moore or Reese Witherspoon, the organization thanks the "bravery" of those women who decided to fight Weinstein in court and says she continues to believe "all", regardless of the verdict. The organization was created after the wave of testimonies published under the Me Too movement.

Actresses Annabella Sciorra, Rose McGowan, Rosanna Arquette or Mira Sorvino, among others, have celebrated the producer's conviction on their Twitter profiles. Several of them reported having been sexually abused by Weinstein, but could not accuse him in criminal matters because the crimes have already prescribed. "Impunity for the powerful men who rape is over," Sorvino said. "It is the beginning of justice. More to come, sisters," the actress has settled.

"My testimony was painful but necessary," said Sciorra, who testified that the producer raped her 25 years ago. "I spoke for myself, with the strength of more than 80 Weinstein victims in my heart ... We can never regret breaking the silence." "We will change the laws in the future so that rape victims are heard, not discredited, and to make it easier for people to report a violation," Arquette wrote.

"For the women who testified in this case, and walked through a traumatic hell, you made a public service to girls and women everywhere, thanks," Ashley Judd tweeted, another of the actresses who have accused Weinstein.

Harvey Weinstein has been found guilty of two of the charges he was accused of: first-degree sexual offense (forced oral sex) to production assistant Mimi Haleyi and third-degree rape (without express consent, under New Law York) to actress Jessica Mann. The jury's decision of the first and only criminal process since the origin of the Me Too exonerates the film producer from the charges of "predatory" sexual assault, a legal term used to explain that the crime is part of the defendant's natural behavior . The latter were the most serious and for those who risked life imprisonment. Judge James Burke ordered Monday that Weinstein be immediately transferred to the Rikers Island jail. He can be sentenced to up to 29 years and is pending an upcoming trial in Los Angeles for two alleged sexual assaults committed in February 2013.

Former White House Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton, who is at the Berlin festival to present a documentary series about herself, has also celebrated the sentence against the producer: "I think the jury verdict speaks for itself, and it's obvious which is something that people have followed, because it was time to report, and the jury clearly saw it, "he said at a press conference in the Berlinale.
