After modest upheavals these last three years, it is a more frank improvement which seems to take shape. In 2019, the music market recorded overall revenues of € 772.5 million, up 5.4%. “The growth is sustained. We are positive, but without triumphalism. The balance remains precarious, ” notes Alexandre Lasch, the director general of the National Union of Phonographic Publishing (Snep).
If we put these results in perspective, there is still a long way to go before finding the peaks of the early 2000s, when the market peaked at nearly 1.5 billion euros. With 625 million euros generated last year, physical and digital sales represent only 44% of this peak. Clearly, the sector did not even arrive in the middle of the ford. The growth of the past few years has only served to return to the level reached ten years ago. A big leap… backwards, for the moment.
