2020-02-25T13:33:06.378Z

The exhibition dedicated to the Italian artist, which closed on Monday evening, marks the greatest attendance ever recorded by the Paris museum

It was Delacroix who held the palm. In 2018, the painter had attracted 540,000 visitors to the Louvre. A fine performance nailed to the post by that of the Leonardo da Vinci exhibition, which attracted precisely 1,071,840 spectators, according to the report made public by the museum on Tuesday.

This extraordinary exhibition, which displayed 160 works (paintings, drawings, manuscripts, sculptures, works of art) closed on Monday, February 24 in the evening after four sold-out months. With 46 additional nocturnes and an intense final stretch: the last three days, the curious - by registration - could approach the protean work of Leonardo da Vinci 24/24 hours, the institution opening (free) its doors day and night .

What feed this absolute attendance record, which flirts with another big recent success, that of the exhibition Tutankhamun, in La Villette (1.4 million visitors).

" That's wonderful "

"It is wonderful that 500 years after his death, an artist of the Italian Renaissance continues to fascinate the general public so much," says Jean-Luc Martinez, president and director of the Louvre museum, in a press release. Today, I have two reasons for pride: to have succeeded in bringing together the greatest number of Leonardo's works and in welcoming so many and so different audiences. It is the scientific excellence and the quality of the reception of the Louvre which were thus acclaimed ”.
