The outbreak of the close shot of a shotgun alerted the policemen who were crossing the Nueva Esperanza site, near the missionary town of San Pedro. Moments before they had crossed into Gustavo Cerpa, who was part of the groups that collaborated in the search for Valdir Prestes Barbosa, aka “El cuerero”, accused of slaughtering Sonia Cerpa in front of her two young children.
The patrol arrived on time to prevent Gustavo from doing justice on his own. The young man told his relatives that he did not have time to reload his 16-gauge shotgun because the femicide pounced on him. Then, he took his knife from his waist and stabbed him several stabs .
With both arms shattered by the pellets and several sharp wounds on the face and abdomen, the femicide was aided by the police, who improvised a stretcher with a board and took it to the national route 14. In the back of a police van was transferred to the San Pedro Hospital and then referred to Eldorado, where he remains hospitalized with a strong police custody. Doctors estimated that he will need about 45 days to recover from the wounds .
Prestes Barbosa, 34, was wanted since Tuesday of last week. That day, he had reached a farm located at kilometer 75 of provincial route 18, area of jungle-covered mountains. His intention was to convince Sonia Cerpa (40) to return to live with him on his ranch in the Laguna Azul area. A few months before they had had a relationship, when the woman had separated from her partner.

In the courtyard of the house there was a short talk that led to an argument. Sonia managed to ask her daughters to escape. The two girls got to see how Prestes Barbosa gave him several stitches and then cut his mother's neck .
Police found out about the crime around noon. Sonia's couple had returned from work and found her lying in a pool of blood. He alerted his brother-in-law after walking to a hill in search of a cell phone signal.
Around noon, the police began the search for the suspect. They knew it was unlikely that he had crossed over to Brazil. A few days later they arrested a family that had given him food and shelter for the night.
On Sunday the Police narrowed the siege in the area of Nueva Esperanza, already in the municipality of San Pedro. Sonia's brothers had joined the rakes along with other acquaintances.
Around 16.30, the femicide and Gustavo ran into a weed-covered path. Cerpa's relatives swear that he only defended himself against an attack by “El cuerero”, but the absence of injuries to his body makes his story unbelievable.
The young man will be investigated this Tuesday by Judge of Instruction Nuria Allou, who must decide whether to release him. He is charged with the crime of serious injuries, a legal figure much lighter than that of attempted murder.
As soon as Gustavo Cerpa was taken to the Dos Hermanas Police Station, his neighbors and friends made a town demanding his freedom. A well-known lawyer of the family measured and prevented the protesters from taking the police station.
