Saint Lucia is a small South African town located in an exotic estuary sheltering one of the most important populations of hippos in the world. In this region, the mammal is so used to human presence, that it sometimes happens to move away from its group to find itself right in the middle of the city.
An unusual scene was filmed by a resident and made headlines in the local media. At night, a hippopotamus strolled on the sidewalks of Saint Lucia, airing between a petrol station and grocery stores. According to locals, the animal was looking for a lawn to graze on.
The city of Saint Lucia is located in a UNESCO World Heritage wetland since 1999. Tourists go there to join the iSimangaliso National Park, where more than 1,200 hippos live. Although they are herbivores, they are feared by the locals. They would indeed be the cause of most attacks on humans in this region, before crocodiles or even wild animals.
