The "Chez Michou" cabaret continues, even without its creator

2020-02-27T19:54:25.279Z

Despite the disappearance of the “blue prince of Montmartre” on January 26, the legendary 18th arrondissement cabaret in Paris remains open

It was believed to be permanently closed or doomed to disappear. Before his death on January 26, Michou had loudly proclaimed that he intended his cabaret to disappear with him. But finally, the famous establishment of 80, rue des Martyrs in Paris (18th century) continues to offer each evening its legendary show of transformists. This capital of nightlife in the capital only remained closed on the evening of the funeral of the "blue prince of Montmartre" on January 31.

It is now his niece, Catherine Catty, who presides over the destinies of the establishment, which opened on July 13, 1956. Aged 57, the new boss had worked in the operating company of the place for twenty-three years. In fact, if he had not officially written testamentary instructions on the future of the cabaret, "Michou had given us a document stating that if we felt capable, we could continue the adventure," explains Oscar, director and artistic director of "Michettes".

It is he who plays the roles of Maria Callas, Barbara, Chantal Ladesou, and Amy Winehouse. "I made the decision the evening of January 27," says Catherine Catty. It was out of the question for her to "leave on the sidewalk" the thirty loyal employees, whom she visits every day. "Every evening, everyone gives their best," says Oscar again, adding that the book of reservations "is full until June".

New issues in preparation

Anny Duperey, very close to Michou (she had prefaced her autobiography published in 2017), told us that she believed that "the artists were so beautiful and the show so great that Chez Michou should not close its doors after him". She seems to have been heard. "It was I who put the ice cream in the room," remembers his side Hervé Vilard, accomplice of the king of Parisian nights since the 1960s. The singer wholeheartedly hopes that the cabaret will continue to be sold out.

"Paris must keep its institutions at all costs, and Montmartre too," insists the unforgettable interpreter of "Capri is over". He is delighted for the artists "with mad talent". Even if Vilard wonders, a little worried, what direction will the artistic direction adopt, himself advocating the maintenance of this benchmark burlesque. "Can a magazine without Michou survive if it only does Michou?" "He wonders.

"I am working on new issues, which I would like to offer to the public for the anniversary of Michou's birth, on June 18," says Oscar. One thing is certain: certain numbers will always be there. Starting with the impressive and cheerful multicolored finish. No way the show will fade. The “Michettes” will therefore sing the famous good-natured refrain “We tell you with flowers”.
