Caesar: the crisis, and after?

2020-02-28T18:30:32.313Z

Once the ceremony is over, this Friday evening in the Salle Pleyel, the time will come to modernize the Academy. For what future?

It was to be the last ceremony of the Terzian era. This Friday evening, Salle Pleyel, we will in fact attend a transition ceremony. Patron of the César since 2003, Alain Terzian is officially no longer president since Wednesday. Some even claim that he will not be in front of the cameras, although he has attended the rehearsals of the show led by Florence Foresti ... Anyway, it will be the producer Margaret Menegoz who will play the institution this Friday, in as interim president of the Academy of Caesar.

Who will be in his chair next year? No names have been released yet. A member of the board of directors for decades, Claude Lelouch recently told us: “Being president of the Cesars? Never, never, never. "Asked also, one of the seven editors of the forum of the World who caused the resignation of the board of directors of the Caesars on February 13 retorted us:" Me? Not even in dreams! ". In the aftermath of the earthquake, it seems that the contenders are not jostling - at least not with their faces uncovered - to take over the helm. However, a new president should be appointed before the summer.

Take the pulse of cinema professionals

From next week, the National Cinema Center (CNC) will work on the "modernization" of the Academy. If the Center does not pay a euro to the Cesars and had never put its nose in its business until now, the institution was called to help by Terzian and instructed by the Ministry of Culture to coordinate the redesign. The CNC will therefore continue the major consultation of cinema professionals, already launched two weeks ago, with a view to a general meeting to be held on April 20. On this day, the Association for the Promotion of Cinema (APC), which governs the Cesars, will adopt new statutes and the 21 members of the resigning board of directors will be provisionally replaced.

A second general assembly will be held “before the summer” and will elect a new board of directors. And, therefore, a new president ... Who, if the discussions take into account the claims put forward in recent weeks, should see his term limited in duration: "At the Oscars, terms are of three years, renewable twice" Said Ben Said, one of the signatories of the World Forum.

Gender, democracy and transparency

One of the main projects for the overhaul of the Académie des César concerns the college which votes for the ceremony: made up of 4,700 cinema professionals, it will be enlarged according to the principles of representativeness, diversity and parity (today today, women only represent 35% of voters). The Caesar governing bodies (APC, board of directors and office) will also be renewed according to these principles.

Beyond the organization chart, the discussions will focus on the decision-making methods within the Academy: "Who, for example, chooses each year the personalities to whom a César of honor will be awarded? Who chooses the people who present a Caesar?…. "Asked the Society of French Directors in a statement that set fire to the powder on January 13. All of these questions should be resolved. Knowing that the watchwords of the rebellious are: parity, democracy and transparency.
