In 2002, millions of EU citizens exchanged their national currency for the euro. Still, many hoard their old coins. It can even hide real treasures.

  • In 2002 the euro replaced the German mark and the pfennig.
  • Old coins from the pre-euro period can bring a lot of money.
  • Valuable coins are pretty rare.

In Germany we have been paying with the euro for around 18 years, but some citizens have yet to say goodbye to the good old Deutsche Mark. Around 13 billion marks had still not been returned to the Deutsche Bundesbank in 2016. However, this assumes that most of the money is lost or destroyed.

Old 2 Pfennig coins can really be worth a lot

Nevertheless, a little treasure can hide in your piggy bank. Some DM coins are coveted collector's items * not just because of the euro, but because of their material. A coin that was previously rather unpopular is particularly valuable: the 2-pfennig coin.

However, only 2 pfennig coins from a certain period are valuable. It is about embossing until 1968 and very few from 1969. The reason: until 1968 the 2-pfennig pieces were made from a 95 percent copper alloy. After that, only copper-clad iron was used. In 1969, however, 500 copper pieces were minted - recognizable by the "J" stamp.

These coins are now traded between 2,000 to 5,000 euros if you find the right buyer. So you should take a quick look at your old DM collection to see if such a valuable 2 pfennig piece is still hidden somewhere. However, the website Münzkatalog Online states the value of a 2 pfennig coin from 1968 at just 175 euros - and only with the stamp gloss rating, that is, flawless.

Ebay sellers charge absurd sums for misprints

On auction exchanges such as Ebay there are still 2 pfennig pieces for prices up to around 3,000 euros . These are usually not in new condition, but are clearly used. In the end, it is up to the collectors to decide what price they are willing to spend.

In times of the euro, 2-euro coins with misprints are particularly in demand. However, some sellers ask astronomical prices. In January 2020, for example, an Ebay seller wanted 200,000 euros with alleged misprints *. Unfortunately, it is not known whether he got his money in the end.
