Sobeval: the slaughterhouse filmed by L214 authorized for a “partial” resumption of its activity

Two weeks after the broadcast of a L214 video questioning calf slaughtering techniques in the slaughterhouse, the prefecture is

Relief on one side, disgust on the other. Stopped since February 28, the Sobeval slaughterhouse in Dordogne has just been authorized by the Dordogne prefecture to partially resume its activity, two weeks after the publication by L214 of a video questioning their techniques for slaughter of calves.

"The prefect signed a partial lifting of the suspension of approval, authorizing Sobeval to resume its conventional slaughtering activity", subject in particular to "enhanced supervision" which will be provided by a newly recruited veterinarian, specifies the prefecture in a press release.

The suspension decided by prefectural decree on February 28, in the wake of an inspection carried out by the Ministry of Agriculture, conditioned in particular the resumption of slaughter to "the revision" of its procedures, "the training of personnel authorized to compliance with these new operating methods and making the level of internal monitoring more reliable ”.

"Scandal" and "disgust" for L214

The reaction of the animalist association L214 was immediate: “In 3 days, it is impossible to have remedied (the) structural and training faults of the personnel within this slaughterhouse. It is scandalous that the pressure of trade unions and other private economic interests comes before the simple respect of a regulation which poses limits - however minimal - to the suffering endured by animals ", reacted in an email to AFP Brigitte Gothière, spokesperson for the association.

"It is disgusting to see that a ton of slurry will have been enough to reopen a slaughterhouse ...", she writes, referring to a demonstration of support in Sobeval, the day before, where manure and slurry had been deposited in front of the prefecture in Périgueux, in protest against this closure.

The L214 association had released a video on February 20, which it claimed revealed “multiple” breaches of animal protection rules. She denounced "dizziness carried out in violation of the regulations", with the head of the calves not completely immobilized, therefore "poorly adjusted shots", injured but conscious animals, and "controls of the unconsciousness and insensitivity of the almost non-existent calves ”. The Minister had recognized "dysfunctions" and "training problems".

Disgusting.

A ton of manure in front of the prefecture will have been enough to cause the reopening of a closed slaughterhouse 3 days earlier ...

Prefectural controls to come

The prefecture explains on Wednesday that its services initially gave a "favorable evaluation" to the "proposals for improving the system for controlling slaughter conditions" presented by the company which employs 450 employees.

In a second step, the operators responsible for "compliance with animal protection rules" received training and "specific instructions" concerning the review of slaughter procedures. A test carried out on Tuesday "made it possible to verify that [...] the slaughter fully complied with the regulations on animal protection", adds the prefecture.

A new evaluation will be carried out in two weeks and the complete lifting of the suspension will take place after the veterinary inspection service, depending on the prefecture, "will have found that all guarantees are provided" for ritual slaughter (kosher and halal) .

As a reminder, Sobeval lodged a complaint after the video was broadcast by L214, saying that the association's "allegations" of multiple "serious abuses" and "offenses" were "damaging the honor of Sobeval and its operators. "
