The measures against the spread of the coronavirus are becoming ever more extensive. The E3 2020 has already been canceled. Will Gamescom 2020 also follow?

  • Corona virus keeps the world in suspense. Numerous trade fairs postponed or canceled.
  • Gamescom 2020 : Do players have to expect the fair to fail?
  • The first events on the Gamescom site had to be postponed.

Cologne - The spread of the coronavirus is currently unavoidable. Over 250 cases of infected people have already been recorded in Germany alone. Numerous trade fairs and events had to be canceled or postponed. Gamescom 2020, based in Cologne , could now also be affected.

Gamescom 2020: How big is the influence of the corona virus on the fair?

Gamescom in Cologne is the world's largest trade fair for computer and video games, measured by exhibition space and number of visitors.

The gigantic event has been taking place on the Koelnmesse site since 2009. The event attracts numerous visitors in the area of over 370,000 annually, and the trend is rising. Gamescom is scheduled to take place again this year, but the fair's corona virus could put a spanner in the works. Players are concerned about current events.

In the past, the corona virus had a negative impact on the gaming industry. Not only that e-sports tournaments, such as the first official PUBG tournament in Berlin, had to be canceled *, as well as distant companies like Epic Games games from their own gaming store *. Numerous flights have already been canceled, supermarkets also suffer from an immense shortage of food and hygiene products and the panic wave does not seem to be stopping due to persistent infections.

Gamescom 2020: venue already affected by the corona virus

The security measures have been increased significantly in recent weeks. In order to prevent the further spread of the corona virus , developers and organizers had to bite the bullet and quickly postpone or completely cancel planned events for several months. Now Gamescom , which takes place in August, could also catch it. The reason for this is the postponement of the international hardware fair, which would have taken place earlier this month, but has now been postponed by a full year.

The event mentioned would also have taken place on the Koelnmesse site, i.e. the same location of Gamescom . But FIBO, the world's largest fitness, wellness and health fair, was also postponed by half a year. Together with Koelnmesse , the organizer Reed Exhibitions is looking for a suitable catch-up date for the event:

“We didn't take this decision lightly; our customers, partners and the FIBO team worked incredibly hard on this event . Although it is disappointing to postpone the event , it is essential that we give priority to the health and safety of everyone involved. Our goal remains to offer the best benefits to all exhibitors and visitors to FIBO. "

The organizer also shared the information on the official Twitter account:

Gamescom 2020: How does the organizer react to the corona virus?

The worst fear of gamers could actually come true due to current developments. Even if Gamescom will only take place between August 25th and 29th 2020 and it is still some time until then, a postponement will by no means prove unrealistic. Players therefore remain in the dark because the organizer has not yet commented on the situation and the following information can also be found on the official website of Gamescom :

"The gamescom ticket shop will be available here from spring 2020."

It is currently difficult to estimate what the status of the spread or containment of the corona virus will be in late summer, so it remains to be seen what the time will bring and how the organizer will react. The Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3), also one of the largest trade fairs for gamers worldwide, is equally reluctant to make an official announcement. Also from Los Angeles, where the world's largest trade fair takes place annually, there is still no news of a possible shift - even though the outbreak of the coronavirus in LA has only recently been declared an emergency.

Several other gamer fairs around the world * have been canceled or rescheduled due to the corona virus. Gamescom would not be the first postponed fair.

A well-known game has now been banned in China due to the corona virus *. With another, gamers can now help researchers around the world find a cure *.
