(HANDLE)

The number of influenza cases registered in the current season reaches 7.2 million, but the weekly ones continue to drop rapidly, especially among the very young, thanks to the closure of schools decided to curb the coronavirus epidemic. In the week of 9-15 March, 264,000 infections were reported in Italy (compared to 345,000 in the previous week).

This is what is learned from the Influnet epidemiological surveillance bulletin, edited by the Istituto Superiore di Sanità (ISS). The incidence level in the 11th week of 2020 is of low intensity and equal to 4.4 cases per thousand assisted (it was 5.7 the previous week) and decreasing especially among children and teenagers, i.e. between 0 and 14 years.

The regions most affected are Piedmont, Lombardy, the autonomous provinces of Bolzano and Trento, Liguria, Tuscany, Marche and Sardinia. From October to March 1 (latest data available), according to the Flunews bulletin, 169 severe cases of influenza occurred, requiring hospitalization in intensive care, of which 35 died.
