Cologne (dpa / tmn) - A slim figure, defined muscles: These are two possible reasons for doing sports. Training alone is not enough. If you want to be particularly slim or muscular, you should focus on a high-protein diet in addition to sports. This is advised by Prof. Ingo Froböse, head of the Institute for Exercise Therapy at the German Sport University Cologne.

Strength athletes in particular often rely on protein for their nutrition because it helps the body build new muscle cells. On the other hand, it is less well known that, according to studies, protein may also be useful as a slimming product - because it curbs hunger.

However, this does not necessarily require protein powder or similar special products. Proteins are also found in normal food.

Good protein sources include legumes, soy products, eggs and milk, as well as fish and meat. Ideal is a protein consumption of 1.5 to 2.5 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight. In addition, carbohydrates should come: They supply new muscle cells with the urgently needed energy.

At the same time, of course, the following also applies: if you want to lose weight, you have to save calories. The basic requirement should always be covered, especially for sporting activities. Otherwise there is a risk of a lack of nutrients - and in response, the body may lose muscle mass or slow down the metabolism. So if you want to get leaner, you have to keep eating enough.
