Coronavirus: Parisians are worried but flout the rules more than others

2020-03-27T08:39:52.938Z

The inhabitants of the capital are more out on the street than elsewhere in France, but without always having the certificate, according to the If Institute

For good or for bad, Parisians are distinguished by the way the population experiences confinement. The Ifop institute has just carried out its “Observatory of the life of the French at the time of confinement”, on behalf of the troubleshooting platform Depanneo.

The institute surveyed a panel of 3011 inhabitants distributed according to the quota method (sex, region, age, etc.), between March 21 and 23. They were asked about their lifestyle since the implementation of the “Stay at home” instruction on March 17, and in particular about their compliance with the various health measures to combat the spread of the coronavirus.

Less attentive to distance

First observation, the inhabitants of the capital acknowledge that they respect health and administrative rules less often than the average. Only 64% of them say they always stay at least a meter away from other people, compared to 71% of French people, for example.

More often outside ...

Parisians are also those who most often leave the home. Remember that it is always allowed in a few specific cases, such as shopping, walking for an hour, or going to the doctor. 82% of them said they had gone to the street at least once between March 17 and when they were interrogated, between four and six days later. Conversely, they are only 67% in the Grande Couronne (Yvelines, Val-d'Oise, Seine-et-Marne, Essonne), and 72% nationally.

“If everyone had stayed in Paris, we might have had more sprains at the lockers. There would have been more temptations and opportunities to meet people than outside the capital, "said doctor on March 17, Bruno Grandbastien, president of the French Society of Hygienic Hospital (SF2H) ), asked about the exodus of many Parisians to the countryside just before the start of confinement. No doubt this is also due to the confinement of Parisians in their buildings and who do not usually have a garden.

… But more often without certification

Not only do Parisians who stay in the capital often take the air, but they also recognize that they sometimes do without their travel certificate. 8% of them have left at least once without this document, which is however compulsory, and 4% say they have never completed it (against, respectively, 3 and 1% at national level).

More Parisians wear a mask

On the other hand, when they go to the streets, 13% of the inhabitants of the capital say they wear a mask, against 9% at the national level. It is probably easier to get it than in rural areas, where there are fewer pharmacies and hospitals.

Fear of catching the Covid-19

Parisians are also very afraid of being infected. 100% of them have this fear when going to work, 57% when talking to their neighbors. Each time, it is well above the national average or in rural areas. They are also more afraid of running out of food or being robbed.

Smaller food reserves

Parisians have also made fewer provisions than elsewhere in the country. 51% of them say they have food reserves to be able to last only 7 days, against 38% of all French people. On the other hand, only 24% have reservations for more than 15 days, against 34% nationally. Suddenly, they are 50% to fear of running out of food in the event of a possible shortage, against 40% of the French.

Call a technician

The density of supermarkets is much higher in Paris than in rural areas, which can give the impression that it will be easier to find a place to get your supplies. Same thing for artisans and convenience stores, more easily available in big cities. In the event of a technical glitch, 21% of Parisians will have the first reflex to call a technician rather than fend for themselves, against 16% of all French people.

Fear for loved ones

If they care for them, Parisians seem a little less worried about losing a loved one because of the Covid-19. They are 78% in this situation, against more than 80% in almost all regions.
