The first economic effects of coronavirus involve cycling, a sport that thrives on sponsorships and which begins to cut or reduce wages, going hand in hand with the world economic crisis. It is of these hours the news that Lotto Soudal and Astana - two World Tour teams - have reduced their expenses.
The Belgian team explained, in a note, that they had asked (by obtaining an affirmative answer unanimously) to their employees to be able to reduce wages. This was true for the runners, while the rest of the staff - about 25 people, including mechanics, masseurs, physiotherapists and drivers - were placed on temporary unemployment, since almost everyone had a collaboration or consultancy contract with the team, from freelancers.
Even Astana, one of the former teams from Nibali and Aru, has run for cover: the Kazakh team has announced that it has reduced wages by 30 percent to all staff, including managers, for the duration of three months. The cut should persist if the emergency continues.
