American infectious disease expert: 'Hard to make predictions but millions of cases are possible right now'. NY state touches 60,000 cases, 965 dead. Trump: 'No quarantine needed for New York' (ANSA)

"Millions of cases" of coronavirus and up to 200,000 deaths in the United States . Anthony Fauci, the top American infectious disease expert and coronavirus task force consultant, reckon on how much the ongoing emergency could cost in terms of human lives. A photograph that seems to clash with Donald Trump's desire to reopen the economy, in whole or at least in part, for Easter. An 'ambitious' goal that requires no quarantine for New York: after threatening the blockade of the state, the American president rethinks us and opts for a travel alert with which he asks residents of the Big Apple, New Jersey and Connecticut to avoid everyone non-essential movements. "It is in line with what we are already doing," cut short Andrew Cuomo, the governor of that state of New York which is the epicenter of the crisis in the United States with almost 60,000 cases and 965 deaths. However, other important outbreaks are also erupting in New Orleans, Chicago, in some areas of California and in Detroit, where the cancellation of the 2020 edition of the Auto Show has been decided, scheduled for June.

"The task force unanimously decided against the New York quarantine," explains Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, assuring that despite the stop, the US economy will restart and grow again at sustained rates. But the crisis unit on Covid-19 is now called upon to decide the next moves. On March 30, the term of the 15-day initiative launched by the White House to slow the spread of the virus expires and new administration guidelines are awaited. Trump has repeatedly said that he would like to ease the restrictions to allow the country to reopen. "We will present the data to the president and decide in the best interest of the Americans," says Mike Pence, the vice president responsible for coordinating the American emergency response, noting how the decision will be made in consultation with the health authorities. "I am not against easing restrictions in areas with few cases," says Fauci, the 'virologist in chief' who does not always agree with the president. The real knot to untie, he explains, however, is that of rapid response tests.
