The Angers University Hospital announced the outlines of a study launched jointly with 32 French hospitals to measure the effects on Covid-19 of hydroxychloroquine, the controversial treatment of Professor Raoult.

The first results of this study, which involves 1,300 volunteer patients spread across the country, will be known in “a few weeks. "

How effective is hydroxychloroquine, better known as chloroquine on Covid-19? A few days ago, Professor Didier Raoult posted a new study on hydroxychloroquine on the website of the Institut hospitalo-universitaire (IHU) Méditerranée Infection de Marseille.

According to him, it confirms the "effectiveness" of this treatment against the coronavirus. Except that this claim was immediately disputed by many scientists.

The main criticism? The study does not include a control group, that is, patients who are not receiving the treatment being studied. As a result, it is difficult to make a comparison to determine whether it is the treatment that is causing the improvement.

This is why this study called Hycovid, which will be conducted from the Angers University Hospital by Professor Vincent Dubee, infectious disease doctor and Professor Mercat, will attempt to determine with certainty the effectiveness of hydroxychloroquine on Covid-19.

The Angers University Hospital will therefore double-blind test the effects of chloroquine. That is to say, prescribe one group of patients chloroquine and another placebo. This CHU has a stock of hydroxychloroquine for research that it is already carrying out on other pathologies but also adequate placebo to make a comparison on the control groups.

"This study will be carried out under conditions that will leave no room for doubt," says Professor Vincent Dubée.

Patients treated in this study with consent will be 75 years of age and older. It is in this population where the risk of degradation is high enough to measure the effectiveness of the study.

This will be financed for 850,000 euros, 600,000 of which by the Angers University Hospital, and the rest by partner hospitals. A call for donations was also launched by the CHU at mecenat@chu-angers.fr
