In the collective imagination, they are those of the unlucky police lieutenant John McClane of Die Hard , the cannibal psychiatrist Hannibal Lecter, the robot killer of Terminator or the prostitute in love with Pretty Woman .

In real life, they are dubbing actors and have put their vocal cords to the service of the seventh art. They are testifying today in the new documentary The voices of legendary dubbing , available free on YouTube: a 25-minute film directed by Nicolas Ramade, highlighting these shadow workers.
The documentary filmmaker, who directed the short film We got dubbed in 2017, here gives the floor to fourteen of them whose voices, instantly recognizable, have accompanied moviegoers for many years, on both large and small screens .
So we recognize the obsessive Monica from the Friends series here, the cosmonaut of Toy Story Buzz lightens it elsewhere. Or the eccentric “Doc” from Retour vers le futur and the indefatigable Jack Bauer from the 24 heures chrono series , dubbed by the late Pierre Hatet and Patrick Béthune, who died shortly after the filming of the legendary dubbing Voices .
Each actor evokes with great humility his career, his beginnings in the profession and what, according to him, makes the specificity of this "complicated exercise" , but which once mastered, "gives a lot of pleasure" . On one side of the screen as on the other.
