The release of at least 100 films postponed: towards a giant traffic jam after confinement

2020-03-31T14:15:26.179Z

"Dying can wait", "Mulan", "Police" ... between the closing of the rooms on March 14 and their future reopening on a date still hypothetical

There are so many that it would be impossible to list them here. More than 100 films at least, scheduled between mid-March and early May, are forced to delay their release, the cinemas have been closed since March 14, due to confinement. On March 18 alone, twenty new items were on display. Since then, press releases from French and foreign distributors have followed one another to announce a delay in an undetermined date or a postponement between June and September. Some have already preferred to postpone their outings for May or even June.

This will pose a thorny problem when the rooms reopen. In May, if all goes well, maybe later, everything will depend on the evolution of the Covid-19 epidemic. How to rewrite all these films that are going to want to be shown very quickly?

Mid-March movies to return

Already, the question arises of the films released on March 11, just before confinement, like "the Good Wife", by Martin Provost, with Juliette Binoche or "A son", by Mehdi M. Barsaoui, with Sami Bouajila, whose careers came to an abrupt end after three days.

Their distributors have asked that they come out on the first Wednesday of reopening. What has been accepted by exhibitors: in a column given to the specialized magazine "Le Film français", Richard Patry, president of the National Federation of French Cinemas (FNCF), promises that "all these films will be shown again to continue their career. It is a strong commitment of the rooms. But it is also, in a way, the only solution to reopen our cinemas. We need these films! "

After which, the boss of the Federation of exhibitors and its members will have to find, with distributors, solutions to stagger the feature films that could not be released during the confinement period, as well as those planned between May and the end of year and who may wish to maintain their original release dates. We must avoid traffic jams: a real headache ...

American blockbusters see far

It is the future James Bond with the premonitory title, "Dying can wait" , scheduled for April 8 worldwide, which opened the ball of reports: its distributor, Universal Pictures, announced at the beginning of March that the film was postponed in November.

Since then, many American or British blockbusters have made the same decision, with two different strategies: some announce new dates, others are wary of it, preferring to see it coming. It is this second option that Disney has chosen, which shifts "Mulan" (scheduled for March 25), as well as other big pieces of April like "Black Widow" (from the saga "Avengers", with Scarlett Johansson), " The New Mutants" , or the thriller "The Woman at the Window ", with Amy Adams, without specifying their future release dates. Ditto for Universal and its "Minions 2 - Once upon a time Gru" , which disappears from the calendars.

Conversely, "the Trolls 2 - World Tour" , still at Universal, intended to delight children during the Easter holidays (initially scheduled for April 1), refers to the holidays of All Saints' Day, October 14. Even more far-sighted, Warner Bros. prefers to postpone her biggest release of the year, "Wonder Woman 1984" , with Gal Gadot: the superheroine will not debut on screens in the first days of June, but on August 12.

French and European films target summer

French distributors have their summer in their sights with their national or European films… when they can. Studio Canal thus repositioned "Police" , with Virginie Efira and Omar Sy, from May 6 to June 3, "Everyone at home" , by and with Michèle Laroque, from April 22 to June 10, and the British family film "The Secret Garden From April to August.

Others have chosen not to date their feature films at this time. Memento Films puts Quentin Dupieux's “Maternal” , “Milla” , and “Mandibles” on hold, while Eurozoom announces the Japanese animation film for children “The New Adventures of Rita and Machin” and the manga “Parallel Worlds For "reopening cinemas". Finally, against the tide, Bac Films is advancing the release of the cartoon “Yakari” , adapted from the TV series, from September 30 to August 19.
