Whooping cough vaccination is part of the standard vaccination program for babies and toddlers. But that's not all - adults also need a refresher. And now also pregnant women.

Berlin (dpa / tmn) - Expectant mothers should in future be vaccinated against whooping cough in the last third of pregnancy. So not only the mother, but also the newborn are better protected from the disease.

This is the result of a new recommendation from the Standing Vaccination Commission (Stiko) at the Robert Koch Institute (RKI).

So far, Stiko has recommended vaccination against whooping cough or pertussis to all infants and young children. The protection was - and will be - refreshed by one more vaccination in preschool and adolescence. Adults receive another refresher as part of the tetanus diptheria vaccination, which is due every ten years.

This recommendation is now supplemented by vaccination for pregnant women - ideally early in the third trimester, i.e. the last third of pregnancy from the 27th week. If premature delivery is likely, vaccination can also be brought forward to the second trimester. The Stiko also recommends repeating whooping cough vaccination for expectant mothers every pregnancy.
