If the lawn does not find a favor, the fertilizer is used first. But when and how often does the grass actually need chemical help?

As soon as the snow has finally melted, some hobby gardeners experience a fright: The lawn is not lush green, but discolored and the purest stain carpet.

So that the grass grows and blooms properly again, many use the fertilizer. But there are a few things to consider: when and how often does the lawn have to be fertilized at all?

The lawn may lack these nutrients and minerals

Before you run straight to the hardware store and get the best fertilizer, you first have to find out what the lawn is missing. Often there are basic nutrients like

  • Water,
  • Oxygen,
  • or carbon dioxide.

But your lawn also needs the following minerals in order to turn into a lush green:

  • nitrogen
  • phosphorus
  • potassium
  • magnesium

These four elements are mainly used in fertilizers. To find out which of these minerals are missing from your lawn, you can take a soil sample and send it to an institute for soil analysis . You can get soil test sets from the hardware store - depending on the laboratory, an analysis usually costs between 10 and 30 euros on average.

Only then will you know with certainty what the grass lacks and how you can deal effectively with it. In addition, you save yourself the need to buy unnecessary fertilizers and possibly still contaminate the soil or groundwater.

Fittingly : Is your lawn discolored yellow? So it turns green again.

Spring and autumn - when are the best times to fertilize the lawn?

If your lawn is only a little stressed, it is usually sufficient to fertilize it twice a year - in spring and autumn . The period between mid-March and mid-April is usually a good time for spring. However, this period can also shift depending on how long or short the winter has lasted. As a rule of thumb, you can remember this period. In autumn it is the period between late August and mid-September that you should keep an eye on.

Also interesting : This is the best time to sow lawn.

However, if your lawn needs more attention because it is well used - for example by children playing - fertilization can also be due four times a year .

Fertilize lawn: what temperatures are necessary?

Do not be too hasty with the first fertilization: Because if the soil is not yet so far, the agent will do more harm than help because the lawn cannot absorb the nutrients at all. This means that the fertilizer may simply remain lying down and strain the roots. Instead, wait until the thermometer rises to around 15 degrees . Only then is it worth fertilizing the grasses.

Use an agent with a high nitrogen content for the first fertilization - this stimulates growth after a long winter.

Do you only fertilize after mowing?

It's the other way around: before you mow for the first time in the year, the lawn should have been fertilized. Mowing usually helps the grass to grow, but this is not so shortly after the cold temperatures - then the lawn first needs enough strength to ward off pests and germs for which it is extremely susceptible during this time.

Can the lawn be fertilized even in the rain?

The best time to fertilize is in the evening , when the grass cannot be burned by the fertilizer in the blazing sun. The fertilizer is usually spread on a dry lawn and then watered . So the agent can infiltrate slowly. Fertilizing directly on a wet lawn - after rain, for example - can be a bit problematic because the fertilizer then gets stuck on the blades of grass.

It is also better to fertilize a little less at once, but more often.

Fertilize lawn: from when you need to limescale

Hobby gardeners often ask whether their own lawn may need lime. You can find out by taking a soil sample and having it analyzed. If the pH is low, the soil is acidic and must be limed . If the value is above 7, you should avoid lime, otherwise you will only damage your lawn - it is alkaline. However, before using lime, you should scarify the lawn first.

You can also recognize an acidic soil from a strong moss infestation . An indication of an alkaline soil, however, is a lot of clover .
