Thirteen deaths in less than a week: it is a horror balance recorded in a Scottish nursing and rest home in the shadow of the coronavirus emergency. A budget that also sheds the spotlight on the forgotten deaths of the pandemic in the United Kingdom, those that have not been included in the official accounts so far. Lives broken by COVID-19 in private homes or in shelters for the elderly, however outside of hospital facilities. Dozens, perhaps hundreds of people, expired in recent weeks, everywhere in the world. As happened in Burlington Care Home, in Glasgow, where - compared to 90 beds - 13 patients have lost their lives in the last few days. The suspicion is that the structure has turned into a lethal outbreak for those who lived there, despite the medical staff defending themselves claiming to have carefully monitored the guests, all with previous pathologies, in compliance with the strict protocols in force. The fact is that in the absence of the swab, performed in the United Kingdom only for patients hospitalized, it is now impossible to ascertain with reasonable precision the reasons for the sudden mortality rate of the structure. The well-founded suspicion remains that the epidemic was the trigger. Or the last straw. A spokesman for Four Seasons Health Care, the private company that manages nursing homes, has confirmed that two health workers - currently in self-isolation - have been diagnosed with coronavirus. "In these exceptional circumstances, we can assure our guests and their families that we are using every resource and energy to help and protect everyone in our facilities," a representative of the management company tried to patch. The fact remains that it was "a tragedy in a tragedy", as the Scottish local government commented in a statement, expressing in the words of the first minister Nicola Sturgeon "sadness and condolence". And solidarity with the families of these other victims who died alone.
