Suddenly everyone buys yeast and bakes their own bread. Or they discover the assembly of small particles for themselves. The time at home also brings new trends.

Berlin (dpa) - Rico is two and a half and is fed regularly. It is not fluffy. But he does what he should: he loosens up. Rico is a leaven. His peers and he is increasingly used in Germany's kitchens. Because in the home time during the Corona crisis, some jobs suddenly come out big.

Baking bread:

If the association of the yeast industry feels the need to report that Germany's yeast supply is secure, then you know that people are serious. You buy lots of yeast, lots of flour and bake. About their own bread. Searches for "baking bread" have been going up steeply on Google since the beginning of March.

Clearly there could be a very practical consideration behind it: If you have to go into quarantine at home, you can use bread and yeast or sourdough to make bread yourself at home. By the way: sourdough Rico can be found in an online exchange. There newcomers can look for a sourdough batch for their bread baking start.

Perhaps baking is also exactly what many people need in the current situation: a well manageable project with a meaningful result. "Right from the start, you have a clear goal to look forward to," says psychologist Julia Krasko from the Ruhr University in Bochum, who is primarily concerned with well-being and happiness.

Puzzle:

"The soothing and measurable illusion of order that clears the brain for other crap." This is how a Twitter user describes what puzzles mean to her. It is like "meditation with the satisfying feeling of having achieved something every time a suitable part is discovered", says another.

Some are currently getting their old 2000-piece puzzle out of the closet. But many also discover the search and merging completely new for themselves. According to surveys by Google Trends in the past few weeks, interest has never been greater in the past five years. Almost everything is sold out, some of the puzzlers on the net whine.

Even at Germany's largest supplier Ravensburger, the demand in the company's online shop is currently many times greater than normal. Particularly popular: puzzle for adults with 1000 pieces. Psychologist Krasko explains what could be behind particle fever: an action that you can handle but that is not too simple is very satisfying. "You are one with the activity, you get into a flow state." After that you have positive feelings, says the scientist.

Sew:

Newcomers are now picking up a needle for a special piece of clothing: the mask. Mouth and nose protection is designed to catch the largest droplets and thus reduce the risk of infection for others. Virologist Christian Drosten sees wearing in public as "gesture, signal, as politeness".

So there are two positive effects for the new sewers: they acquire a new ability and they demonstrate solidarity. Instructions for masks are now piling up on the net - just like pictures of self-made specimens. And there is also a lot of recognition. Psychologist Krasko says: Sharing on social networks can also "give you the good feeling of being in the same boat".
