Öko-Test examined baby porridge and examined the ingredients. Popular brands in particular did not do well.

  • Öko-Test examined around 20 jars of baby food .
  • The results are not pleasant for all well-known manufacturers .
  • Not everything that makes a healthy impression is really good for the little ones.

NRW - On the go or when things have to go fast, offer the little ones a delicious, balanced meal : This is what ready-made baby food is actually intended for. Especially when it comes to feeding the young, many parents only want to offer the child the best. Öko-Test has now examined around 20 different types of baby food , as RUHR24.de * reports.

Öko-Test controls baby porridge: only a little real fruit in conventional baby food

None is really questionableof varieties. As Öko-Test reports, none of the 20 baby food jars tested showed any pesticides or other toxins. What Öko-Test complains about is the strikingly low fruit content in baby food (all service items at RUHR24 *)

Instead of using real, pure fruit porridge, many manufacturers , including well-known, popular brands, cheat with thickened fruit juices . This increases the proportion of fructose and thus the taste appealing to babies, while the nutrient content decreases.

Baby porridge: Not "very good" in the eco test of baby food in a jar

Only porridges that are supposed to be based on fruit were tested , apart from two all of them in organic quality . However, none of the products scored "very good". Öko-Test was able to award nine glasses of baby food with a "good" rating, including:

  • Alnatura pear with blueberry
  • Pure Alnatura pear
  • The organic mango in apple
  • The organic plum in apple
  • Hipp strawberry with raspberry in apple
  • Hipp peach in apple
  • Holle apple & pear with apricot
  • Holle apple & peach
  • Livable organic apple with pure mango

Baby food: jars are rated worse by Öko-Test because of the lid

Probably particularly annoying: It is not the contents of the baby jar, but the lid that is responsible for the fact that Öko-Test did not award "very good" this time. All tested fruit pulp jars are closed with lids containing PVC, which according to the Öko-Test pollute the environment too much.

Because of the ingredients , especially the baby food manufacturer Bebivita did poorly. According to the Öko-Test, both of the popular brand's products included in the test contained around 42% fruit too little real fruit . Other ingredients in the glass are rice semolina, juice concentrates and water. The "Peach with passion fruit in pear" variety from the manufacturer therefore received the poorest rating with "Poor" .

Öko-Test examines baby porridge: several deficiencies in baby food

But not only the environmentally harmful seals and the lack of fresh fruit meant that over half of the fruit pulp jars tested were only able to achieve moderate to poor test results . Öko-Test also criticizes the advertising promises for baby food . The label "Without preservatives and / or dyes" is misleading according to the Öko-Test . The manufacturer presents the absence of these substances as an advantage, although they are already prohibited in baby food .

The advertising promise "Without sugar" quickly makes a fruit porridge appear healthy. Despite this label, many glasses contained large amounts of fructose . Too much for babies, say the experts at Öko-Test, who recently also examined charcoal *.

Öko-Test advises against feeding baby porridge as a main meal

In general, the experts at Öko-Test do not recommend feeding fruit porridge as a main meal in the first year of the baby's life because of the high sugar content . Instead, it is better to stir only small amounts into a milk-cereal porridge.

None of the fruit porridges tested are suitable for being regularly fed pure. Vegetable and meat porridge is more suitable for a better supply of essential nutrients such as iron or B vitamins.
