UEFA executive unlocks 70 million to help clubs

In light of the current crisis and the financial difficulties that many clubs are facing across Europe due to the decrease in revenues during the stop imposed by the coronavirus emergency, the UEFA Executive Committee has decided to immediately release the payments of the club compensation related to their contribution to national team competitions. 676 teams from all 55 affiliated federations will therefore benefit from payments of 70 million euros. The UEFA Executive Committee approved the guidelines on the eligibility principles for the European club competitions of 2020-21. And they reflect the principle that admission "is always based on sporting merit". Therefore, UEFA urges national federations and leagues to consider all possible options (including a change of league format) to complete the season. However, in the event of early termination, the procedure for choosing clubs should be based on "objective, transparent and non-discriminatory principles".

The balance of € 2.7 million for players released for the play-offs will be distributed at the end of these games in the autumn. For Euro2020, a minimum of € 200 million is available for distribution to clubs, as agreed in the memorandum of understanding between UEFA and Eca. Based on the payment distribution mechanism approved today, 70 million euros will be distributed among those clubs that have released players for the European qualifications and the Nations League, and the remaining 130 million euros will be distributed among those clubs that will release players for Euro 2020 These payments, UEFA emphasizes, will benefit a very large number of clubs across Europe and provide them with vital oxygen at a critical time. 676 teams from 55 national federations will in fact receive amounts ranging from 3,200 to 630,000 euros for their contribution to the European qualifications and the Nations League for the period 2018-20.
