An almost private tribute in memory of the fallen to celebrate April 25th. Surprisingly this morning the President of the Republic visited the altar of the Fatherland. Alone and with the mask Sergio Mattarella climbed the staircase and paid tribute to the unknown soldier. At the top he found two cuirassiers, also with masks, who wore a crown to the sacellum of the unknown soldier. A carabinieri trumpeter blew the silence.

Conte, long live Italy freed and who resists  - "Long live Italy. Italy freed Italy with dry eyes in the dark night. Long live Italy, Italy that is not afraid. Italy with open eyes in the sad night. Long live Italy. Italy that resists ". The premier Giuseppe Conte writes it on his social channels recalling the Liberation Day and quoting some verses of the famous passage by Francesco De Gregori.

Mattarella's message: 'April 25 is our strength, unity to restart' - The Resistance, Liberation and the end of the Nazi-Fascist "madness" are part of the history of the Republic, they constitute an "ethical reserve, of extraordinary civil value and institutional "which today, once again, must provide the country with that powerful common energy - well represented by the Tricolor - to face together the re-launching phase of the country in continuity with the values of April 25th.
The President of the Republic intervenes sharply on the Liberation Day by smoothing out any controversy - moreover confined to marginal far-right environments - preferring instead to use that reservoir of values that was born from the struggle for liberation as the ideal engine of a recovery from the coronavirus emergency. A restart that must necessarily be similar to that which Italy knew how to put in place since the first post-war period.

On a day of remembrance and celebration that Covid19 has removed from the squares to confine it to homes, Sergio Mattarella tunes in to the real worries of the Italians looking for the inevitable connection between the disasters of the time and the difficulties of these months. This is why the head of state praises the "frontline" fighters who today are doctors, nurses, workers and those who are moving the country forward. All these citizens "manifest a spirit that honors the Republic and strengthens the solidarity of our coexistence, in the sign of the continuity of the values that have made our country extraordinary". And if at that time, Mattarella writes in a continuous reference between past and present, "with tenacity, with a spirit of sacrifice and a sense of belonging to the national community, Italy has overcome obstacles that seemed insurmountable", today "our peculiarity in the knowing how to overcome adversity must accompany us even in the hard test of a disease that has broken many lives ". United and solidarity, therefore, to go well beyond Phase 2: "we need an action to relaunch and renewed capacity for economic and social planning and we are all called to this enterprise, institutions and citizens, political forces, social and economic forces, professionals, intellectuals, operators in every sector ".

For this reason, no one should venture to devious works of removal of the original meaning of April 25 which remains the untouchable pillar of the Republic: "the seventy-fifth anniversary of the Liberation is - underlines the president - the founding date of our democratic experience of which the Republic is garrisoned with its Constitution ". "Remembering the Resistance, the Liberation struggle, those decisive pages of our history means reaffirming the values of freedom, justice and social cohesion, which were at the base, feeling united around the Tricolor". Italy, Mattarella recalls, has endowed itself "with antidotes against the regeneration of those germs of hatred and madness that had nourished the wicked Nazi-fascist adventure".

This is the message launched by the Quirinale for a Liberation Day that, for the first time, will be lived without marches and demonstrations, with flowers and laurel wreaths placed alone, in accordance with the provisions of the lockdown. But that everyone will be able to celebrate by participating from the screens in "#Bellaciaoinognicasa", the flashmob promoted by the Anpi for 15.
