Virtual handkerchief during the quarantine for the right to abort in Mexico

2020-04-25T03:19:19.284Z

13 years ago, Mexico City approved the Legal Termination of Pregnancy. According to the WHO, each year around 23,000 women die from clandestine abortions worldwide.

On April 24, 2007, Mexico City (known as the Federal District) approved the Free Termination of Pregnancy until the 12th week of gestation. The entity thus became the first State of Mexico to guarantee the right of free, public and free abortion for women in a country where abortion is still punishable by prison, outside of certain circumstances.

13 years later, only the State of Oaxaca has joined the decriminalization of abortion in the country. The rest continue without taking a step forward with legislation that has sometimes been tightened to protect life from conception.

The fight for the right to abortion has become in recent years one of the banners of the feminist movement in Latin America, with a green tide that grows increasingly in countries like Argentina, Chile, Ecuador, Peru, Colombia or El Salvador . According to a report by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2017, every year 45% of abortions performed in the world are performed in conditions of risk for women, this represents 25 million unsafe abortions. About 23,000 women die worldwide each year from undergoing a clandestine abortion.

On the occasion of the commemoration of 13 years of legal abortion in the capital of Mexico, various feminist groups, activists, writers, politicians and human rights defenders joined in a virtual handkerchief for the right to abortion throughout the country. With the HT # 13AñosILE and # PañuelazoVirtual they uploaded their photos to social networks wearing the green scarf, symbol of the movement.
