The toll-free psychological support number of the Ministry of Health and Civil Protection has started. Every day, from 8 to 24, over 2 thousand specialized professionals will answer the phone, or online, to requests for help. "The service will be safe and free," says the ministry. The number 800.833.833, has the technological support offered free of charge by TIM. The number will also be reachable from abroad on 02.20228733 and access methods will also be provided for the deaf.

"It is a structured and important response implemented alongside all the efforts of Italian healthcare to better face the challenge of Coronavirus. At this moment it is essential to be close to people who need emotional support, to listen to their frailties, to face fears together ". Health Minister Roberto Speranza explains it by talking about the toll-free number of psychological support active today.

The number chosen for the service pays tribute to the Law of 23 December 1978, number 833, which established the National Health Service. The service coordinated by the Ministry of Health, by Dr. Mariella Mainolfi, with the technical support of Dr. Maria Assunta Giannini, sees the participation of various associations and scientific societies in the psychological area. The goal is to provide reassurances and suggestions, to help alleviate anxiety in the face of daily life overwhelmed by the arrival of the epidemic and it resolves into a single interview. To respond to the need to provide a more in-depth and prolonged listening over time, the calls will be directed to the second level of which, in addition to the NHS health and social and health services, many scientific societies in the psychological field. The requests for help will be sent from the first level also on the basis of their specificities: for example, psychology of childhood and adolescence, addictions, psycho-oncology. The second level professionals will offer support interviews, repeated up to 4 times, by phone or online. The goal is to provide expert consultations through empathic listening to the pain and anguish connected to the emergency, thus promoting the activation of a process of processing the traumatic event. All this allows those who ask for help to acquire emotional and cognitive skills useful for dealing with the post-emergency. The first level includes more than 500 emergency psychologists from the Civil Protection Voluntary Associations: Federation of Psychologists for Peoples, the Italian Society of Emergency Psychology, the Italian Relief Corps of the Order of Malta, the Alfredo Center Rampi. Over 1,500 voluntary psychotherapists from the following scientific societies enrolled in the Ministry list (DM 2 August 2017) and members of the CNOP Council participate in the second level: the Italian Association of Psychology (AIP), the Italian Association of Psychoanalytical Psychology (AIPA) , the Italian Federation of Psychotherapy Associations (FIAP), Italian Members European Federation for Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy (SIEFPP), Italian Society of Psycho-oncology (SIPO), the Italian Society of Pediatric Psychology (SIPPed), the Italian Society of Behavioral Therapy and Cognitive (SITCC), the Italian Drug Addiction Society (SITD) and the Italian Psychoanalytic Society (SPI).
