The meter keeps climbing: a million more in a week. As of April 29, no less than 11.3 million French people were covered by the partial unemployment scheme due to the drop in activity linked to the coronavirus epidemic. According to the latest score by Muriel Pénicaud, the measure was requested by 890,000 companies (available in 1.06 million establishments) and currently benefits more than one in two employees in the private sector. This corresponds to 4.8 billion non-working hours or 420 hours per employee, or more than 12 weeks of 35 weekly hours…

In detail, 57% of the employees concerned work in establishments with fewer than 50 people, a rate which drops to 16% for SMEs with more than 250. Four sectors account for 64% of requests for partial unemployment, 58% of the workforce at layoff and 60% of hours not worked: trade and auto repair, accommodation and catering, construction, and specialized service activities,
