Mattarella: 'It's time for prudence, clarity from the government'

2020-05-01T08:00:28.744Z

The head of state invites the institutions to collaborate: 'Do not put an end to the anguish. Italy is mature '. We need "a fair, effective and timely support for families and productive activities" (ANSA)

"Finally we start again" but woe to file "the anguish of the previous weeks, under the violent and fast aggression of the virus or the fact that we have overcome the two hundred thousand infections and that every day we have to mourn a few hundred victims". Prudence and prudence again: this is the heart of Sergio Mattarella's message to the Italians who, having been tried by two months of confinement, are pawing for a return to normal . It is not by chance that he launches it on May 1st, as if he wants to combine safety and work that are not - and never must be - in opposition to each other. The exit from the tunnel is possible but it is certainly not the time to "nullify the sacrifices made so far".

On the day when the importance of work is celebrated, the President of the Republic also speaks clearly to politics and from his words we understand how the rate of litigation that still pervades the parties - and, unfortunately, also the institutions - worries him a lot. In this situation of serious emergency, "a responsible climate of loyal collaboration between institutions and institutions" is needed, he warned dryly as the clash between Regions and central government raged.

A civic sense that the head of state also asks Italians who seem to show much more: "I know that we can rely on the sense of responsibility of our fellow citizens - manifested, in this period, to an admirable extent by their almost totality - because, in the new conditions, we continue to behave with the necessary prudence ". There is also a direct reference to the responsibilities of the executive who at this stage has the duty to illuminate and reassure the country with a few effective rules: "reasonable and clear indications are needed from government institutions". A stick directed to the executive as a whole that has the objective of closing the ranks to manage this very difficult phase 2. Italy is going through a "period passage full of difficulties", Mattarella repeats several times pushing on the national unity, highlighting the "admirable" behavior of citizens who must not give up right now. "The recovery is possible because in the almost two previous months we have managed to mitigate the danger of the epidemic very much. We must defend this result to protect our health," insists the head of state concerned by a climate of "free everyone" that could bring to catastrophe.

There is no lack of tones of confidence and optimism in this particular May 1st message. The president stressed that Italy is today a "mature and strong country" and precisely for this reason it must be able to seize opportunities from misfortune . Italy "in harmony and unity" must be able to "redesign through work" the near future of the country: "the setback we have undergone pushes - writes Mattarella - to accelerate towards a change that must enhance and not undergo phenomena such as globalization and the digitalization of the economy, with forward-looking choices ". And to do this, Europe's contribution cannot be missing. That, the president acknowledges, has "already made important decisions". Go back to work, therefore, because "Italy wants to build its tomorrow" and because "there cannot be a Republic without work, as the first article of our Constitution solemnly states".

But the intentions or high values enshrined in the Charter are not enough, "immediate, effective and timely support is needed for families and productive activities, for those who have been unemployed and without income, so as to keep all the resources of our capital intact social". "Everyone's efforts must be directed to the recovery, in a concordant way, without distractions or negligence", is the summary of the head of state who just doesn't want anyone to forget, perhaps distracted by political conveniences today out of time and out of place, such as is the country's only priority.
