Fernando Trueba's playlist: Gilberto Gil, tradition and avant-garde

2020-05-05T23:00:07.752Z

The film director and music producer feels a weakness for the Brazilian musician and affirms that listening to him is always a joy.

After having dedicated lists to Caetano Veloso, Chico Buarque, Milton Nascimento and Marisa Monte, one could not miss dedicated to Gilberto Gil.

Gil is musically powerful, a rhythmic genius, capable of making each song on an album sound like a different genre and yet without losing his personality for a second.

  • Quarantine with Michel Camilo
  • Quarantine with Don Pullen & George Adams Quartet

He has collaborated with all the interesting musicians of his generation and those of the past, he has written music for movies and he has been Minister of Culture, but that should not make us forget that Gil is a 100% musician.

I have a weakness for his love of versioning: The Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Bob Marley, James Taylor ... and I have included some of my favorites in today's list. His live shows are usually excellent too, and his album  Quanta , although not one of the least known of his classics, seems to me a gem from start to finish.

When she makes traditional music it makes her sound avant-garde. Listening to Gil is always a joy.
