What is Dalgona coffee?

The name comes from a South Korean television program in which actor Jung Il Woo prepared the drink and said that the taste reminded him of the caramel candy Dalgona.

Dalgona coffee can be made from four simple and very inexpensive ingredients :

  • Instant coffee
  • sugar
  • water
  • milk

Attentive coffee enthusiasts will now think: "That sounds like frappé!" In fact, Dalgona coffee shares the ingredients with the Greek iced coffee variant and is also prepared in a similar way. The dosage form is fundamentally different.

Can I use normal coffee powder for Dalgona coffee?

This question can be answered quickly and easily: No. In contrast to instant powder, the coffee powder does not dissolve and then floats around unappetizingly in the coffee and then sticks between your teeth. Do yourself a favor and invest in instant coffee, even if you probably don't look at it otherwise.

Do I have to use a blender for Dalgona coffee?

The easiest and fastest way to make Dalgona coffee is with a normal blender . If you do not have something like this, or if you do not want to get the appliance dirty for just one coffee, you can also use an electric milk frother . If you want to work with muscle strength, you can shake the mixture in a tightly sealed mason jar or use a blender for protein shakes. But plan for ten to fifteen minutes of hard work.

Can you make Dalgona coffee with sweeteners?

If you want to avoid sugar, you can also prepare Dalgona coffee with granulated sweetener, liquid sweetener is not suitable. If you don't drink cow's milk, you can of course replace the milk with vegetable milk. Oat milk, cashew milk or roasted almond milk * are particularly suitable here because they have a sweet, nutty taste that goes well with this coffee.

Can I drink Dalgona coffee hot?

This coffee specialty is served as a refreshing cold drink. If you are not a fan of cold coffee, you can of course drink Dalgona coffee hot. Simply shake the coffee cream with hot water and serve with hot milk. For example, you can add caramel or vanilla flavor to the milk. Just give it a try.
