Just in time for the strawberry season, Öko-Test examined the sweet spread. A popular brand jam is the loser in the test.

  • Öko-Test examined strawberry jams in different price categories.
  • The result was very positive for most products.
  • Of all things, a popular brand manufacturer does poorly.

NRW - For many,  strawberry jam is simply part of a balanced Sunday breakfast or in the morning during the week. There are now numerous manufacturers that sell the red spread in different compositions or consistencies. Öko-Test (edition 05/2020) has now taken a close look at jams from well-known brands , as RUHR24.de * reports.

Eco test: there is no "strawberry jam"

A total of 20 types of strawberry jam were selected by Öko-Test, including twelve strawberry fruit spreads and eight strawberry jams. Because: There is actually no strawberry jam . How exactly suppliers can name their fruit cooked in sugar is regulated by law in the jam ordinance. Accordingly, jams consist only of citrus fruits . Most people talk about strawberry jam at the breakfast table .

According to the regulation, jams must contain at least 55 percent sugar. There is no requirement for products called fruit spreads. However, they often have higher fractions . Regardless of the name, Öko-Test is of the opinion that the spreads should be free of pollutants . (More service articles on RUHR24.de *)

Eco test: Most strawberry jams are recommended

The good news first:  You can still eat healthy foods at the  breakfast table . Because according to the Öko-Test most of the tested products with the marks "very good" and "good" are to be recommended overall. However, many are also in the middle of the field.

Strawberries are a local superfood and make oranges look old. To avoid unsightly pressure marks, you should leave the stems and sepals on the fruit until they are prepared - even when washing. #Strawberries #Way makemore pic.twitter.com/wrhgOtAAhC

The loser of the test also advertises that it is "Germany's number 1" and the strawberry jam . However, "Schwartau Velvet" with "Sufficient" was the only product to get the worst grade . The spread contains 50% fruit, but according to the Öko-Test it has too many pesticides .

Strawberry jam was tested by Öko-Test on pieces of pollutants

The "Schwartau Velvet" receives the worst grade in the latest Öko-Test investigation , but is not the only one that contains pollutants . According to the magazine's sample, pesticide residues are actually often found in strawberry jam . After all, more than half of the products tested show traces of them. In some red berry spreads , up to six different pesticides were even detected.

Another criticism of the testers was that the strawberries hardly come from domestic cultivation. Germany only appeared as the place of origin of the strawberries in the fruit spread of the organic brand Zwergenwiese and in the two products of the Schwartauer Werke. Most providers indicated several countries of origin.

Strawberry jam: The Öko-Test grades at a glance

An excerpt of jams that were rated "Very Good" by  Öko-Test :

  • Demeter "The Berry Farmers" Strawberry
  • Rewe organic strawberry
  • Dwarf meadow orchard strawberry

For this strawberry jam , among other things, it was enough for a "good":

  • Alnatura strawberry fruit spread
  • Edeka "Fine Fruit Mousse" strawberry
  • Happiness from strawberries
  • Mövenpick "Gourmet Breakfast" strawberry
  • Bonne Maman strawberry jam
  • Landliebe jam strawberry
  • Zentis "The Real" strawberry

Strawberry jam is still not healthy, according to the Öko-Test

Even if the residues of pesticides in most of the strawberry jams tested are harmless, Öko-Test indicates that the spread is still a candy . When it comes to the critical limit of the sugar content, the magazine follows the recommendations of the World Health Organization (WHO). For most products from the current test, half of an adult's daily sugar requirement is covered in one serving.

Öko-Test recently found similar sugary results for muesli bars *. However, one of the main problems in the test are mineral residues and MOAH. These are aromatic hydrocarbons that can contain carcinogenic substances . In addition to the mineral oil stocks, the testers also complain about glyphosate and bee venom in some cereal barslez
