  • A man accidentally discovers a hidden room .
  • This is probably around 120 years old.
  • A historian has a guess as to what he was there for.

Because of the corona virus, people from all over the world are currently spending a lot of time at home. Because a man from the UK was bored at home, he started working on his newly bought house in Plymouth. What he probably did not expect: That there is another ancient room hidden behind a wall.

Man is working on the house - suddenly he discovers space from the past

Usually you don't expect a lot of surprises when you do it yourself: A British man named Jake should have been all the more astonished at his discovery. When drilling, he found that one wall in his home has a different texture than the others . Curious about this, he drilled a hole big enough for his head. What did he find there? A large underground room * with a vaulted ceiling - almost like a tunnel. To see more, he enlarged the hole and lit the room with a torch.

"There was a lot of construction waste from another era in the cave , so I climbed in to explore and take a closer look," Jake said, according to the British news portal Dailymail. It soon became clear to him that the room was larger than initially expected. At the same time, he was looking for clues as to how old the room could be. There were hints of old bottles and paint cans, but the decisive factor was an old newspaper that was among the waste.

"I searched the jumbled scraps of newspaper for dates and useful information to determine the time period. There were only small clues: the style of writing, no color, currency and then finally the date! What was barely legible was the year 1964." Based on this find, Jake assumes that the room was sealed off over 50 years ago . However, the cellar itself is probably much older - about 120 years old , the Brit suspects from the details of the bottles found.

Hidden basement was probably used to store coal

In his find, he initiated an acquaintance who works as a historian. He said: "This whole area used to be a big hill called Windridge Hill." The hill was removed to build houses that often had large cellars. He suspects that the cellar found was intended for coal storage. "I have already seen that such places have been converted into wine cellars, mushroom gardens or - if they are large enough - into a swimming pool." He has not yet revealed what Jake is up to with his secret basement ...
