Update from Wednesday, April 29, 2020, 11:15 a.m .: Lidl sells disposable masks from Thursday (April 30 , 2020 ) at cost price in times of Corona . This means that the discounter does not make a profit, but the price only covers the manufacturing and distribution costs. 

The masks are offered in a 50-pack for 33 euros each while stocks last. Lidl is thus reacting  to the mask requirement in Germany that has been in force since Monday (April 27, 2020) . The masks are to be offered in all Lidl branches throughout Germany . One package is issued for each purchase and customer. 

According to a press release, the discounter would also like to  offer reusable masks in the range, for example made of fabric. The goal is that as many people as possible have access to a mask to protect against the corona virus .

Update from Tuesday, April 28th, 2020, 3:34 pm: Since Monday (April 27th, 2020), wearing a face mask when shopping and in public transport in Germany has been mandatory. The question arises: When can you actually buy mouthguards from Aldi, Lidl, Rewe, Real and Co. ? Now some supermarket chains have planned the first offers: Aldi Süd and the drugstore dm are now selling respirators, as chip.de reports.

  • Aldi Süd * plans to sell sets of 10 disposable masks "at cost" from 6.99 euros as of Thursday (April 30th, 2020), as the "Lebensmittel Zeitung" reports. Accordingly, Aldi Süd completely foregoes the margin, but only two packs should be available per customer. The offer cannot be found in the current brochure. 
  • The drugstore chain dm has been offering disposable protective masks to all customers without a face mask since Monday (April 27th, 2020). The face mask is sold by the staff at the entrance for one euro a piece - however, each customer receives only one mask.
  • At Aldi Nord * a possible sale is currently being examined: "We are currently examining the procurement of larger quantities of protective masks or everyday masks to equip our employees or for sales", says the Aldi Nord press office.
  • The retail giant Rewe is also currently considering a possible sale. First, Penny and Rewe's employees are to be equipped with masks, the company told chip.de: "We are currently examining whether we can offer our customers appropriate products." 
  • As of Friday (April 30th, 2020) Lidl sells 50-pack disposable masks at cost price. In addition, mouth guards made of fabric will also be offered in the future.
  • According to chip.de, the Kaufland supermarket chain is currently still examining how the "current consumer demand for protective masks can be met promptly".

Buy face masks for Corona: Edeka, Netto and Hit

According to the supermarket chain Edeka , the mask requirement "as far as possible". Upon request, a spokeswoman for Edeka announced that the company was able to provide sufficient face masks for its employees in the times of Corona . "We hope to be able to offer customers masks for personal protection in our shops by the beginning of May ," said the Edeka spokeswoman. For belonging to Edeka discount chain Net Schels, the same applies, according to a spokeswoman: There, too, we should from the beginning of May masks buy can.

Buy face masks for Corona: Aldi Nord and Aldi Süd

The discounter Aldi Nord * has not yet fully decided on the sale of face masks . "We are currently examining the procurement of large quantities of protective masks or everyday masks to equip our employees or for sales," Aldi Nord's press office told the news portal watson.de. So it remains to be seen whether consumers can buy masks from Aldi Nord .

Aldi Süd * was less cautious than its sister company Aldi Nord when it came to selling face masks : "We would also like to offer our customers disposable or textile masks soon." First of all, the equipment of the employees has top priority, according to Aldi Süd. The equipment is a supplement to the existing equipment against Corona .

Buy face masks for Corona: Lidl, Rewe and Penny

Anyone who  hopes  to be able to buy face masks from Lidl will likely be disappointed: the discounter said on request that no masks are currently being sold. Lidl, however, wants to equip its employees with masks. The related chains Rewe and Penny told the news portal watson.de: "We are currently examining whether we can offer our customers appropriate products."
