Seen from afar, Animal Crossing seems to be a sweet anti-capitalist utopia. It would be missing out on a central mechanism of this video game: enlarging one's assets and paying off debts.
Whether it is to build and then enlarge his house, build bridges, or even prepare plots of land to welcome new residents, the player will have to contract increasingly huge virtual loans from Tom Nook. This emblematic raccoon from the Animal Crossing series is both a real estate developer and banker of a new kind: he lends money at zero rate and lets his debtor repay it at his own pace.
On paper, nothing prevents the player from never honoring his debt. But it's hard to resist the other main attraction of Animal Crossing : building the most beautiful village possible
