The barbecue season has started again. So that grilling is not a sticky affair, the device must be cleaned well. This is how it works with the electric grill.

  • You can grill quickly and easily on the electric grill.
  • The cleaning afterwards should not be neglected.
  • You have to be particularly careful with the heating elements .

As soon as the sun shows up at elevated temperatures, the barbecue fever starts again in Germany. The food can be prepared on an electric grill particularly quickly and practically smoke-free. The device can also be started on the balcony or in the apartment all year round. After the pleasure comes the work: The electric grill wants to be cleaned nicely so that it is ready for the next barbecue evening.

How to clean the electric grill

Before you start cleaning, you should let the electric grill cool down completely and pull out the mains plug - otherwise there is a risk of a short circuit if it comes into contact with water. To make it easier to remove food residues, you can set the grill to the highest level shortly before the end. The residues are "burned out" and fall off by themselves. You shouldn't wait too long to clean it: at the latest the day after, you should get to work if you still want to get burnt-on incrustations away.

Depending on the model, cleaning can be a little different: If you have a grill with a solid grill plate, this can be easily brushed off with detergent water. Under no circumstances should you use steel wool or other pointed tools, as these will destroy the coated surface. Then dry the plate with a lint-free cloth.

But there are also numerous models with open heating elements . You should disassemble these electric grills before cleaning. As a rule, the fat drip tray should be filled with water when grilling so that fat cannot burn in. It is best to take a look at the operating instructions for handling. After grilling, clean the bowl with water and detergent - read more about this below.

Heating elements & Co .: Can the electric grill in the dishwasher?

The heating elements must never be immersed in the dishwasher or completely under water. The good thing is that the high temperatures make it difficult for grease to adhere to the heating rods or spirals . Therefore, it makes sense to set the grill to the highest level as soon as you are done grilling, so that even the most stubborn stains have no chance - they will be burned out in the heat.

If there is still burned-in grease, it is best to scrape it off with a plastic scraper - without damaging the heating elements. Or you can put a little washing-up liquid in hot water and moisten a sponge cloth with it. Then put this around the heating elements and let it work. The same applies here: the mains plug must be pulled out. Then wipe off the grease residue with the cloth.

Removable parts such as splash guards or lids may be partially in the dishwasher. Just find out what the manufacturer says about it. Otherwise, also clean these components with detergent and warm water.

This is how the grillage becomes clean

Some manufacturers state that the grill grate * can be cleaned in the dishwasher. However, this can lead to rust formation or some detergent additives can damage the material. Instead, you can clean the grillage with a brush - but it shouldn't be steel wool or a ceramic hob scraper. You should also keep your hands off abrasives. Instead, an aluminum foil crumpled into a ball is suitable , with which you rub off the incrustations.

An alternative would be to soak the grillage in soapy water overnight. Instead of soap, you can also add two to three tablespoons of baking soda *. What has also proven itself: coffee grounds. It can be used to easily remove incrustations. Simply rub the grill grate with it and then wash it off with water.

So that the grillage doesn't get so dirty in the first place, you can rub it in with a raw, cut potato before grilling . This means that the food remains less stuck to it and less deposits are formed.

Cleaning the electric grill: how to dispose of the water properly

Since fat is mixed with water in the fat drip tray, you should not simply dispose of it over the drain *. The grease residues settle on the sewage pipes and lead to blockages . According to the Bavarian Consumer Agency, you should let the shell cool down and skim off the solid fat. You can then filter the water further by placing kitchen paper over the drain and pouring out the contents of the fat drip tray. The kitchen paper then goes into the residual waste.

If there is only a little fat left in the water, you can also pour it directly into the drain. However, it is best to add a little washing-up liquid so that the grease cannot accumulate in the pipes.
