The Big Apple deserted as never seen at the time of the Covid-19 pandemic. The other side of New York could not escape the eyes of a New Yorker doc, the director Spike Lee, who decided to capture some images in other times defined apocalyptic in a short film.
Simply titled 'New York, New York' and on the notes of the Frank Sinatra song of the same name, Lee shows scenes of places that otherwise would have been crowded and instead now empty as the streets, subway stations, Broadway theaters, Wall Street, Times Square, sports stadiums or arenas and there is no shortage of scenes of hospitals, health workers, ambulances or people with masks lining up to enter supermarkets.
"It is painful - Lee said - not to see anyone but it is at the end of the film that New Yorkers are seen". The short ends with a sequence that shows the Empire State Building illuminated in red and with intermittent lights that make it look like a beating heart. "It is no coincidence that the director himself defined his film a love letter to the city.
