More practical relevance right from the start or go the classic way? Several universities in Germany offer so-called model courses for aspiring doctors. What's behind it?

Nuremberg (dpa / tmn) - Few are lucky enough to be able to choose a place to study medicine. Nevertheless, it cannot hurt to deal with different offers. A distinction is made in medicine between regular and model courses.

Frank Wissing, General Secretary of the Faculty of Medicine (MFT), explains what is behind it in the "Abi" magazine (issue 02/2020) of the Federal Employment Agency.

According to Wissing, the standard course of study is the "classic of medical studies" and is structured as follows: The preclinical part (1st to 4th semester) and the clinical part (5th to 10th semester) are followed by the practical year (PJ). At the end of the preclinical part, there is the first state examination, the physics.

In contrast, prospective doctors in model courses take the state examination after the clinical part, i.e. after ten semesters. That is why universities have more freedom when it comes to designing their degree programs - and they have better integrated theory and practice right from the start. In regular courses, students only come into professional practice in the clinical part, as the expert explains.

Of a total of 39 universities, 11 currently offer a model course. These also differ, which is why aspiring medical students should inform themselves about the structure on the university website.
