  • The good news: when you fill out the applications, it is a little easier compared to before.

Tax return 2019: submission deadline on July 31, 2020

For the 2019 tax return , you should write this date on the calendar: You must submit the completed forms to the tax office by July 31, 2020  at the latest .

Unless a wage tax relief association or a tax advisor helps , the submission deadline will be extended to the end of February 2021. Because the last day of February in 2021 falls on a Sunday, such declarations must be submitted by March 1, 2021 at the latest.

The deadlines are decisive for everyone who has to file a tax return . For example, there is an obligation if someone has earned more than 410 euros in addition to wages. This also applies if someone has received wage replacement benefits of more than 410 euros per year, for example unemployment benefits, parental benefits or short-time benefits.

Everyone who had several employers next to each other must also deal with the tax return. Spouses must also fill out the forms if both have received wages and a partner was taxed with tax class V or VI or the couple had chosen the so-called factor procedure (tax class IV / factor).

Self-employed persons, freelancers and traders must also file a tax return.

Tax return 2019: dawdling automatically becomes more expensive

The Office grants postponement only if there is good reason. If you neglect to hand over the fee, you may pay extra, warns Stiftung Warentest.   The tax office can therefore request a late surcharge. This amounts to 0.25 percent of the fixed tax, at least 25 euros per month of delay. "If the declaration is only submitted 14 months after the end of the tax year - in March 2021 - the late surcharge will be fixed." This takes place automatically when the tax office has set an additional claim. "If there is a refund or the tax is zero euros, it is at the discretion of the tax officials whether a surcharge is due."

Tax return 2019: It's that easy compared to before

The good news: "The tax return 2019 is faster than before - not only online, but even on paper," explain the experts at Stiftung Warentest *. Some lines and fields in the forms are now highlighted in green and marked with a small "e". Filling it out is a little easier: "All data that taxpayers have had to enter there is now entered by the tax office," test.de says. Employers, health insurance companies or pension insurance companies should have sent him this data electronically by the end of February. "The data provided is considered taxpayer information, so everyone should review their tax assessment later."

The fields highlighted in green can be found in Annexes N, R and pension expenses. They are therefore particularly important for employees and pensioners. Practical: "For example, employees no longer have to transfer the values from their wage tax certificate. They simply leave the fields blank, for example for gross wages or paid wage tax." The same applies to contributions to social security in the pension expense plan. "Pensioners no longer have to state their pension amount * or the start of their pension in Appendix R," Stiftung Warentest further reports.

In addition to wage tax data and pensions *, contributions for Riester or Rürup pensions, benefits with benefits or unemployment benefits are transmitted to the tax office as e-data. "Taxpayers should leave the marked fields blank and only fill them out if they are certain that the transmitted data is incorrect or incomplete. If you enter something in these fields, a personal check is automatically triggered by a clerk at the tax office probably requesting evidence to show why the data submitted is incorrect or incomplete. Investors would only ever have to provide loss certificates. The proof for the disabled person's lump sum is at least easier than before. "Taxpayers only have to submit evidence if the lump sum is requested for the first time or if something changes."
