(ANSA) - ROME, MAY 11 - It is an area where earthquakes are frequent, the one that at 5.03 today was hit by the 3.3 magnitude earthquake, which occurred at the depth of ten kilometers, near the towns of Fonte New, Mentana and Monterotondo. The earthquake, the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (Ingv) announced, occurred 11 kilometers from the city. "However, it is an area that needs to be monitored," noted seismologist Alessandro Amato, of Eng. "The area affected by this morning's event does not present a significant seismicity in recent years," notes Ingv. The last major earthquake dates back to 119 years ago, when the Sabina area was hit by an estimated 5.3 earthquake on April 24, 1901. Considering the earthquakes that have occurred in the Sabina from 1985 to today, it can be seen that very few and low-magnitude events are present, while if you move east, towards the municipalities of Guidonia and Tivoli, seismicity is more frequent.
