2020 did not start on the right foot from a climatic point of view: the first 4 months of the year were marked by temperatures above the national level, so as to make the current year one of the hottest for Italy . This is revealed by the analysis of anomalies made by Simone Abelli, meteorologist of IconMeteo. On the rainfall front, the period January-April is not very uniformly rainy throughout the territory: one third of the rain is missing with 21 billion cubic meters of rain less than the average. "The calculations - explains Abelli - confirm a decidedly high thermal anomaly (+1.3 degrees) which currently keeps 2020 among the hottest years of the historical series, while the rainfall deficit settles at -34%, with a distribution fairly uniform throughout the territory, which corresponds to 21 billion cubic meters of rain less than the average ". Abelli then analyzes the causes of the two phenomena. "As regards in particular the month of April - he notes - the stratospheric Polar Vortex has completed its definitive transition in the anticyclonic mode typical of the warm northern semester through a final warming which began in the second half of March, with a consequent gradual weakening of the vortex itself, until the complete inversion of the zonal winds between the last days of April and the beginning of May. Also in this respect, therefore, Abelli points out, the warm season can be considered to have started. In conclusion, the meteorologist of Icon Meteor concludes, " the spring season still in progress highlights anomalies of the same sign as those of the month of April, but more contained due to the month of March which is wetter than average and only slightly warmer than normal ".
