Overath (dpa / tmn) - They are small and also suitable for aquarium beginners: land crabs. Depending on the type, the small crawlers have a back diameter of 1.5 to 3 centimeters.

For example, the purple vampire crab or the mandarin crab with a brown body and orange scissors and legs are particularly popular as pets. They belong to the types of geosesarma, as the funding community explains life with pets.

For a group of five to seven animals, a standard terrarium with a base area of 60 by 30 centimeters is sufficient. You should only keep one species per tank, because the different species are not compatible with each other.

Since the small land crabs live in nature between water and land, they must also find these areas in their terrarium. However, the land area should be significantly larger. A small water reservoir is sufficient for Geosesarma species, in which they can regularly moisten their gills and shed their skins. This can be, for example, a suitably large bowl.

Most types of geosesarma are twilight and nocturnal. With increasing acclimatization, the land crabs can be seen more and more during the day. They are omnivores, but prefer animal food such as mussel meat, mosquito larvae or insects. These are available as frozen food or freeze-dried in specialist shops.
