Mothers in particular are familiar with the discussion: How can I prevent my child from having an allergy? Hay fever can actually be prevented - with these measures.

  • Your eyes itch, your nose runs and you feel tired and limp: the lot of many pollen allergy sufferers in the hay fever period, which really started in February.
  • If you already have hay fever, the treatment of symptoms with antihistamines or hyposensitization remains to "reprogram" the immune system.
  • The body's defense is used to the repeated administration of allergen doses to the allergenic substance such as birch pollen until the immune system no longer overreacts.

But does it have to go this far or can you also prevent an allergy?

Development of hay fever: How to prevent

The 4th edition of the "White Paper Allergy in Germany" deals with this question among other things. Allergy experts from various specialist areas provide information in the book on the current situation of allergy sufferers. And that is becoming more and more: Around 30 million people in Germany suffer from allergic diseases - and the trend is rising, as reported by the German Society for Allergology and Clinical Immunology (DGAKI).

Although a child cannot develop hay fever, the "White Paper Allergy in Germany" gives tips that should prevent hay fever :

  • Avoid a humid indoor climate that can promote mold
  • Avoidance of active and passive smoking (already during pregnancy)
  • Avoid indoor and outdoor air pollutants
  • Caesarean section only when medically necessary

Prevent hay fever symptoms - better ventilate

But even those who already suffer from hay fever can prevent complaints, as reported by the Allergy Information Service. For example, those affected should avoid the pollen as much as possible and keep away from flowering fields and meadows, for example.

Another important measure to keep hay fever symptoms in the fence: ventilate properly! Allergy sufferers should only ventilate at certain times : in the country rather in the evening, because there is the most pollen in the morning and in the city in the morning, because most pollen sinks there in the evening. Depending on the type of pollen, this rule of thumb should be adjusted.

Mugwort pollen will fly more often in the morning - whether in the city or in the country - which is why mugwort allergy sufferers should not be outside in the morning. They should also ventilate the evening hours. Or birch pollen: These fly increasingly between eight and midnight, which is why birch pollen allergy sufferers should air out before eight in the morning. It is advisable to briefly ventilate the room because less pollen gets into the apartment than opening the windows for a longer time.

Dust masks and glasses with well-fitting glasses are said to alleviate the hay fever symptoms, as reported by the Allergy Information Service.
