Public transportation is the enemy to be avoided at all costs in the time of the coronavirus. And so the race to buy bicycles started in America: so many have been sold in recent weeks that stocks are almost dry.
With subways and buses to avoid, and hungry for sports because of the closed gyms, the Americans have rediscovered the passion for two wheels. The data leave no doubt about the new love: sales of walking bikes have jumped by 121%, those of professional bikes by 66%, those for children by 59% and those of electric bikes by 85%. Many stores have run out of bicycles at lower prices and the picture is likely to get worse. The halt in supplies and production caused by the coronavirus makes it almost impossible to meet demand and a real crisis is looming.
The return of the two wheels puts bicycles back in the center of American society. For generations they have been the symbol of the hot summer days in the city or of children running around in the countryside. Street bike has recently established itself as a successful sport on the west coast, while on the east one, hipsters have adopted the bicycle as their symbol of being alternative. In any case, only a very small part of the population has considered it as a serious means of transport. Only 1% of New Yorkers have so far considered it an alternative to the subway or bus. In Portland, the city with the highest percentage of America, only 6.3% of the population uses it instead of public transport. The coronavirus, however, is radically changing society and the rise of the bicycle is a testament to this.
