Coronavirus: the Oscars 2021 postponed?

2020-05-21T11:20:00.445Z

As the health crisis upsets the film industry, the Academy is already considering postponing the next ceremony scheduled for February

The date had been set for long months at February 28, 2021, but it could well be changed. According to the American magazine "Variety", the Academy of Oscars plans to postpone the next awards ceremony because of the consequences of the coronavirus epidemic on the film industry. The Hollywood high mass could be postponed for lack of films to claim the precious statuettes. Since cinemas closed in the United States in March, dozens of feature films have been denied theatrical release and deferred in 2021.

Already in April, the Academy of Oscars had changed its rules: it had decided that, unlike in other years, feature films having benefited from a VOD or streaming release could be eligible for the 2021 edition, to provided that a theatrical release date has been scheduled before the health crisis. "We want to celebrate cinema, but we don't know exactly what form it will take," said David Rubin, president of the Academy. While specifying that it was "impossible to know what the cinematographic landscape will be at the time of the ceremony". But many producers preferred to postpone the release of their films in theaters rather than choosing the VOD route.

What will happen to the Caesars 2021 then?

If the hypothesis put forward as "probable" by "Variety" is confirmed, it would be the first time since 1934 that the Oscars did not take place between February and April. What will happen to the Caesars 2021 then? The ceremony is set for February 26 and, for the moment, the Academy has not planned to postpone its evening. The day after the last edition, surrounded by controversy and preceded by the resignation of all of its board of directors, the organization was to work with the National Cinema Center on its in-depth overhaul. But with the closing of theaters and the stopping of filming, the coronavirus crisis has upset the calendar of professionals in the 7th art.
