(ANSA) - ATHENS, MAY 23 - Greece has returned to the office asking once again for the United Kingdom to return the Parthenon marbles, which have been kept for over 200 years at the British Museum in London.
Taking advantage of the reopening of the Acropolis of Athens on Monday after two months of closure due to the coronavirus, Greek culture laministra, Lina Mendoni, today declared a communication that "the reopening of archaeological sites (...) is an opportunity for international committees to support for the institution of the Parthenon marbles to reaffirm their unceasing request and that of the Greek government for a definitive return of the marbles to their native land ". The sculptures, he continued, are the result of a "looting" and Greece will never recognize their ownership by the British Museum.
Greece has been engaged for decades in a campaign to obtain the return of marble and for a period it has also considered going to the legal channels but in recent years Athens has favored the diplomatic channel.
