Little exercise, a lot of fat and sugar: The result is often digestive problems, obesity, but also susceptibility to infections. How to relieve your gastrointestinal tract in four steps.

If we eat unhealthy for a long time, the stomach and intestines rebellion at some point. On the one hand, this manifests itself through gastrointestinal problems such as flatulence, constipation or abdominal pain. The reason for this is inflammatory processes that affect the mucous membranes of our digestive organs. The body can no longer properly absorb nutrients through the inflamed stomach and intestinal mucosa, which also damages the immune system.

Not only the immune system suffers when the gastrointestinal tract is not intact. Chronic diseases are also fired up or even triggered by the focus of inflammation in the body, as reported by the news portal Focus.

Healthy intestinal flora grow in four steps

Colon cleansing is the magic word that is recommended by many medical professionals for permanent gastrointestinal complaints. The aim of such remediation is to banish harmful bacteria from the gastrointestinal tract and to "grow" the intestinal flora in a healthy manner. A practical side effect of this is that it also reduces the susceptibility to infections. Doctor and author Aviva Romm dealt with the topic in a health advisor and developed a 4-step plan for a healthy intestine :

1. In the first step, everything that irritates the mucous membranes of our digestive system should be banned from the menu. For example medication (which is not absolutely necessary), alcohol, industrial sugar and ready meals like fast food . Instead, one should rely on unprocessed foods such as vegetables and support the digestive tract with medicinal plants such as sage or thyme - for example in the form of tea.

2. According to Doctor Romm, digestive enzymes in the form of food supplements can be helpful during intestinal rehabilitation. Digestive enzymes are formed in the salivary glands and intestinal mucosa, for example, and help to break down food into its components. Gastric juice also plays an important role in digestion . This can be stimulated by drinking a glass of water with a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar before each meal.

3. So that good intestinal bacteria can spread to the mucous membranes , you should eat a lot of lettuce, cabbage and fermented vegetables such as sauerkraut. Valuable lactic acid bacteria are also found in so-called probiotics. In the phase of intestinal flora reconstruction, fiber is also important, which is mainly found in vegetables, linseed and psyllium husk.

4. The intestinal wall takes around a week for inflammation to subside and for the cells to renew. You can support your intestinal tract by adding  zinc, selenium, vitamins A, C and E - ideally in the form of healthy foods.
