(ANSA) - ROME, MAY 28 - Millions of grasshoppers are devastating hectares and hectares of land in Sardinia in the province of Nuoro where a flood of ravenous insects besieges houses and slaughters pastures and harvests devouring fodder, wheat, alfalfa and what they find during the advanced them. It is the alarm launched by Coldiretti on a real 'biological catastrophe' which is particularly affecting Valledel Tirso in the municipalities of Ottana, Sarule, Orani, Escalaplano, Orotelli and Bolotana which are deliberating on the state of emergency.

According to the World Bank, the invasion of locusts in 2020 is the most massive of the last 70 years: it has already touched 23 countries in East Africa, the Middle East and Asia, putting many countries at risk for food security already exacerbated by the emergency caused by the coronavirus. Climate change has been favored by the invasion of the different parts of the globe, with caldotorrido which favors the multiplication of insects. The only hope, Coldiretti underlines, is in natural predators like birds that could help contain populations of locusts that from uncultivated lands, abandoned due to the crisis in the countryside, start attacking the harvests devastating everything they find in their path.
