It's a situation never seen before! After two months of containment and an unprecedented economic slowdown, the number of job seekers in category A - without any activity - jumped, recording its largest increase with 843,000 new admissions compared to March, reveals this Thursday the statistical service of the Ministry of Labor, the Dares. This represents a historic explosion of 22.6% in the space of a month. This very strong increase thus brings to 4,575,000 people the number of applicants identified in the main category of Pôle emploi, the highest level ever recorded since the creation of the series in 1996.

The categories B and C, which list the people who exercised a reduced activity, they decreased by 29.9% (-633,600) due to their passage in category A. “Three quarters of the increase in the number of job seekers in category A observed this month is fed by people registered in categories B and C in March ”, underlines in this sense the statistical service of the Ministry of Labor. In total, the first three categories of Pôle emploi (A, B and C) recorded an increase of 209,300 job seekers (+ 3.6%).

The first effects of the coronavirus crisis had already been felt heavily on the unemployment figures for March, which had only two weeks of confinement. Pôle emploi already had 246,100 new category registrations, for an increase of 7.1%.
