(ANSA) - ROME, MAY 28 - In 2020, sales of PCs, tablets and phones will decline by 13.6% on a global scale, to 1.9 billion units, and the telephone sector will be the most affected. Deliveries of mobile phones will decrease by 14.6% to fall below 1.5 billion pieces, while smartphones will register a -13.7% to 1.3 billion. This is predicted by Gartner researchers.
The pandemic is increasingly relying on phones and computers to work and stay in touch with friends and family, but that doesn't translate into more technology spending, analysts note. Quite the opposite: the impact of the health emergency on the economy will stop shopping. "Lower economic availability will result in fewer people changing phones. As a result, the lifecycle of smartphones will grow from 2.5 to 2.7 years," explains research director Ranjit Atwal.
The contraction of the computer market will be less marked, stopping at 10.5%. "The decline could have been much more marked, but the lockdowns have forced businesses and schools to enable work and education from home, prompting the purchase of new devices," notes Aatwal. For this reason, some types of products - laptops, tablets and Chromebooks - will experience a lower than average drop. (ANSA).
